Matt Kitchens

Matt was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on April 3, 1973. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1995, and his Juris Doctorate degree from the Mississippi College School of Law in 2002. He was licensed to practice law in Mississippi in 2002. He served for one year as a law clerk for Justice Oliver E. Diaz, Jr., at the Mississippi Supreme Court, then practiced for five years at the firm of Kitchens and Ellis in Jackson, Mississippi. In 2007, Matt moved to Asheville, North Carolina. He obtained his North Carolina law license in 2008, and practiced as a litigator, with an emphasis on construction law, for two years at the firm of Van Winkle, Buck, Wall, Starnes and Davis, P.A., the oldest law firm in Western North Carolina.

 

Matt returned to Mississippi in May of 2010 and joined the Kitchens Law Firm, P.A., as a partner. He maintains an active practice with a focus on personal injury, criminal defense and post conviction issues, including federal and state

appeals, petitions for post-conviction relief, habeas corpus petitions, expungements and restoration of hunting and voting rights.

 

Matt is a member of the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, is on the Board of Governors for the Mississippi Association for Justice and is the editor of its online publication, The Closing Argument. He is a member and officer of the Copiah County Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, and the American Bar Association.

Matt is married to Casey Traxler Kitchens, and they have three children, Eydi, Trax, and Emma Love. Matt and Casey are very active in their local community. Among other things, they serve as mentors at the public elementary school and have co-founded a community open air market in downtown Crystal Springs. For the previous 10 summers, Matt has been a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Rainbow, a summer camp for pediatric cancer patients. He has also served on the steering committee for Camp Rainbow.
